3 weeks into the season and the fishing has been really good….not so much the weather for the last week or so with 5 of the last 10 days from drizzly rain to sunshine with a storm on the horizon. Not to say like many camp owners that fishing is always tremendous and always a “10”, there have been a few, but very few, times lately when they needed some coaxing…that’s fishing. But when you start out as good as it’s been so far, a couple hours of slack is still pretty darn good and fish do that once in awhile.
Walleye are transitioning to deep earlier than normal…changing bait and plan of attack getting ready for the big ones to get more active now after spawn and then go on the move to deeper structure.
Livewells are full of those great 15-17 inch eater walleyes and always activity in the fish cleaning room, with lots of released walleye in the mid to upper 20 inch range again this week…no 30 inch monsters lately, but many in the 25-28 range. 1 boat’s day reported 47 walleye…20 released in the slot (18-23) or above…and not an uncommon report. Several trophy Pike with a couple headed for the taxidermy, some real nice Smallmouth, and sightings of huge Muskie follows with a few accidental hookups.
All in all…plenty for the fry pan…a impressive share of big fighters…and we are all happy (but how can you not be when fishing?)! Eagle is shining around South Shore Lodge right now.
