When thinking back on 2016 fishing season, I am searching for what excuse I need to use…
Which of the “fisherman excuses” would most apply to this year. Too windy – too calm – too sunny – wind from the wrong direction – storm coming in – too hot – cold front – barometer falling – moon phase etc etc.
Which most applies? Which do I need? None of them!
One day in July, I stopped at my local propane dealer for supplies and he mentioned “I hear fishing is slow these days.” I looked him in the eye and said “not by us”! Having a lot to do that day (as most trips to town become), we had a quick discussion on how our success has been all summer and the tactics we’ve been using to help him with his upcoming weekend trip out on the lake.
When sitting at Sport Shows, or answering questions on the phone with potential guests considering South Shore, I’m often asked “how’s the fishing at your place”? My reply is that we’ve been here since the mid 80’s and “if we didn’t have good fishing, we’d have been broke long ago”! We do not cater to town tourist attractions or recreational resort activities. Fishing is what we offer in the remote, peaceful Canadian outdoors and our location on Eagle provides us with good fishing all summer. No “dog days” here and no excuses needed!
From shallow bays for springtime spawning to deeper structure reefs, gravel shallows or sandy deep flats, all are close by and produce successful fishing for beginner to very experienced fishermen.
I could continue to “tell” you how good the fishing was this summer, but the best measure is the pictures you can see on the website Photo Gallery page. Take a look at them and the sample of the success of our fisherman in 2016. Then…multiply what you see times 10 for all the pictures on guest cameras and phones that made it home with them but never got to my album! Very impressive and captures what a great way to spend a week.
The slot release size and trophy limits we introduced years ago, have blossomed into consistent, dependable fishing and our area of Eagle continues to shine! It provided everything a lodge owner and fisherman would hope for and there is zero reason to not expect the same again in 2017. I can’t wait!
To our many dedicated guests, all those that have reconnected after a few years away, and the new faces we saw this summer we hope was their first trip of many to come…more thanks than words can express.
An honorable mention to all the “likes” on our Facebook page. Much appreciated!

Will you be at the Milwaukee Sport Show this March?
How was the 2016 fishing at South Shore? In early August I caught my personal best Walleye at 29 “. Five minutes later my brother had boated a 30”. So much for family bragging rights. In 2016 we caught more big walleye than we had ever caught in previous years. Is our trip for 2017 booked? You betcha. August can’t get here soon enough.
